Even though the weather was still hot, fall fashions started appearing in some of our local stores.
TRENDS I'VE NOTICED: equestrian boots, utility boots, knit dressing, cowl necks, retro sweater dresses, pencil skirts, big purses, belted everything.
TREND I DON'T LIKE: Tall rubber rain boots. Practical? Yes. Fashionable? No. I even saw an over-the-knee pair of rubber rain boots at TJ Maxx! There always seem to be some ugly boots in fashion, and this year, it's these. Bring back the Uggs!
SURPRISING TREND: In its annual fall fashion section last week, our local newspaper mentioned that leather pants are in. Really? They were also featured recently on eBay's home page. From what I've noticed, it's been a buyers' market for leather pants on eBay, so I'll be anxious to see if that trend changes.
PLEASANT SURPRISE: One of our local TJ Maxx stores has a very nice selection of designer leather jackets. Classic cafe racer styles in buttery soft black and brown leathers by designers such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Tahari. Priced at $129-$149.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: While it's nice to see JC Penney carrying over-the-knee boots again, the quality was really disappointing, especially for $120. The faux leather version seemed more like cheap stretch vinyl while the faux suede pair seemed more like thin velour. At least last year's were higher quality for not being the real thing!
IF IT'S NOT REAL LEATHER, YOU CAN'T CHARGE "REAL LEATHER" PRICES: I noticed what I thought was a pair of leather shorts at our local Macy's store. Upon closer inspection, it was a fabric with a leather sheen to it. However, the shorts were pricey at $99, not much less than what a new pair of real leather shorts would cost!
NEW SHOPPING DESTINATIONS: Our newest Saks "Off Fifth" Outlet opened last month. Our first Nordstrom Rack opens this week!
